Case Status: Early Stage / Preliminary Procedure

Gaia Libertas has formally initiated one of the most challenging and structural fronts in its history: the request for the opening of a Civil Inquiry (Inquérito Civil) and formal representation against irregularities and systemic cruelty practices in the supply chain of JBS and its subsidiary brands.

The Focus of the Investigation

The filed complaint is based on preliminary investigations that indicate non-compliance with minimum animal welfare standards in the transportation of poultry and swine for slaughter, alarming mortality rates during transit, and overcrowding in integrated farms that violate public commitment terms assumed by the company.

Initial Procedure Steps

  • Collection of Documentary and Testimonial Evidence: Gathering of transportation reports, sanitary inspection reports, and audiovisual records of loading conditions.
  • Request for Conduct Adjustment Agreement (Termo de Ajustamento de Conduta - TAC): Demand for binding and independently audited targets for transitioning to cage-free systems.
  • Public Civil Action (Ação Civil Pública) for Collective Moral Damages: Preparation of the initial petition seeking environmental financial compensation and urgent structural reforms in slaughter units.

“Confronting the giants of the meatpacking industry requires technical rigor, courage, and an uncompromising commitment to animal lives.”

Next Updates

This procedure is in the early stages of instruction and expert evidence collection. New statements and progress reports will be periodically made available by Gaia Libertas's animal defense team.

Taking on giants requires structure.
